What the HELL is an NFT? Why is it so popular?

Can someone explain it to me, my only understanding is that it’s digital art that you can buy.. is that it?? Cuz the way I’ve heard people explain it sounds so damn confusing it causes my skin to boil & makes me want to gauge my eyes out. The way I view it, all I see is just a bunch of snobby internet nerds that want to feel superior. Idk, it just confuses me so much no matter how hard I try to understand it. What is the purpose of an NFT?????? Like can you make money off of it? Is it an investment? What can you do besides have a damn picture?
