A Twitter user has reported that the Wagdie NFT project has stolen artwork. Particularly from the extremely popular card game, Magic: The Gathering. Of course, this isn’t confirmed, but it looks incredibly similar.
About Wagdie NFT and the Alleged Stolen Art
Wagdie NFT project (We are All Going to Die) is an NFT project of 6.7k items with a current floor price of 0.54 ETH on OpenSea. By all accounts, they seem to be a successful collection, and they also have 14,000+ followers on Twitter.
The collection seems to be fantasy-based. Originally, they were minted for free, which seems to be a trend recently. They have no website and are based only on Twitter.
Now, it has been alleged that the Wagdie NFT collection has stolen art from the popular card game, Magic: The Gathering. Apparently, according to Remi Lemille on Twitter, their NFT is “literally just Massacre Wurm flipped and traced”. This is a large worm-type creature with some features similar to a dragon, too.
Magic: The Gathering
Magic: The Gathering is both a tabletop and digital collectible card game created by Richard Garfield. To clarify, it is played by 2 or more players and to those watching from the outside, the rules seem confusing.
The game has an extremely large and dedicated fanbase. Around the world, there are many events all the time, and their official Twitter collection has over 320,000 followers.
Although Wizards of the Coast, the game’s publisher has shown their interest in stepping into NFTs, there has been no official Magic: The Gathering NFTs out yet.
There was an unofficial NFT collection created. However, that was interrupted as the publishers of the original game brought lawyers into the situation due to their aim to get into the space. This may not be a good sign for the Wagdie NFT collection if it turns out that they did steal the art.
If they were to get into the space, it’d be sure to be a success. Also, a lot of their fans would no doubt buy their favourite characters in NFT form.
