In an effort which merges authentic contemporary art with digital art specialism, Pace Verso, the digital art wing of Pace Gallery, has partnered with art platform Art Blocks to launch a new instalment of generative NFTs. Led by digital artist John Gerrard, and including designs from both Pace and ‘crypto-native’ artists, the inaugural collection from the collaboration is called ‘Petro National’.
Petro National features 196 unique NFT artworks, where, in staying on-brand with Gerrard’s climate-conscious values, each uses a rainbow-hued gasoline spill in a body of water to depict the outline of a country.
The 196 assets will drop on Art Blocks on June 21st at 10AM EDT via a descending auction format, with 25% of proceeds going to CO2-combatting organisation Climeworks, as well as other funds which support regenerative farming organisations.
The works will also be on display at Pace’s 540 West 25th Street gallery throughout the highly anticipated NFT.NYC event which takes place from June 21st-23rd. A week later, they will then be on display at the opening of Gerrard’s solo show at Pace’s 510 West 25th Street space on June 28th.
In speaking on the project, Gerrard had this to say:
“Discovering Art Blocks allowed me to understand that the NFT can be much more than a media file—rather, it is a complex, data driven, on-chain world that aligns with my historic works in game engines. Making WebGL works in this setting radically expands the exhibition and distribution possibilities of my art. The work can be addressed culturally from anywhere in the world, and it uses this radical new platform to ask questions about contemporary energetic, social, and political conditions and inequalities”.
