While big sports are gradually adopting various web3 initiatives, the iconic European football function English Premier League (EPL) is officially entering the realm. This is known from the recent filing of two crypto and NFT trademarks to the US Patent and Trademark Office.
The news came from the licensed trademark attorney, Michael Kondoudis’ Twitter post from June 6th. Thus, according to the attorney, “the Premier League has filed 2 US trademark applications for NFTs, cryptocurrencies, digital tokens + collectibles, digital asset trading, financial and crypto services, virtual clothing, footwear, and sports gear.”
The filings include EPL’s name and logo of a “lion wearing a crown in three-quarter view” and the other “loving cup trophy” with lions on each handle and a crown on top. Kondoudis also adds that this is a quite logical league’s step to protect its intellectual property amidst the overwhelming web3 craze.
As for other European football bodies, the German league Bundesliga has already joined the hype, having signed a two-year partnership with the sports-profiled NFT marketplace SoRare.
Although there are no specific details or dates when the multi-million fandom will be able to explore the web3 products by EPL. Anyway, the variations are endless, starting from virtual merch to exclusive digital artworks, and metaverse-related experiences. Let’s wait and see.
