Pussy Riot on Sunday, June 26, announced the launch of LegalAbortion.eth to protect reproductive rights. Set up by UnicornDao, a DAO co-founded by Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova, the initiative makes it easier to donate to top reproductive rights organisations with crypto. Here’s all you need to know about LegalAbortion.eth, why it matters, and how it works.

Pussy Riot and UnicornDao have launched LegalAbortion.eth.

What is LegalAbortion.eth by Pussy Riot?

Pussy Riot’s LegalAbortion.eth comes in the wake of the US Supreme Court decision overturning Roe vs. Wade, which had legalised abortion across the nation. Amid this, Pussy Riot and UnicornDAO launched LegalAbortion.eth to protect reproductive rights.

Essentially, LegalAbortion.eth is an Ethereum wallet that will serve as a donation hub for leading reproductive rights organisations. To be sure, these organisations, like Planned Parenthood, do not have ETH addresses yet. As a result, LegalAbortion.eth makes it easier for crypto holders to make donations in ETH and USDT. What’s more, the wallet has multi-Sig signers. This includes Pussy Riot, UnicornDAO, ppl pleasr, and UkraineDAO deployer vegsurfer, to name a few.

Indeed, UnicornDao will donate the full funds to the organisations via Endaoment, sans their 1.5% fees. In fact, Endaoment is a community foundation and public charity. Notably, it facilitates charitable crypto donations to nearly any US non-profit.

Supported reproductive rights organisations

In short, UnicornDao will distribute the funds from LegalAbortion.eth to seven organisations. These are:

  1. Centre for Reproductive Rights – A global human rights organisation that advances reproductive rights as fundamental human rights.
  2. Fund Texas Choice – A non-profit funding abortion travel for people in Texas.
  3. Sister Song –  A Black women-led, national reproductive justice collective.
  4. NARAL Pro-Choice America – An abortion rights advocacy group.
  5. Fòs Feminista – An international alliance for sexual and reproductive health, rights,  and justice.
  6. Planned Parenthood – US’ leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care.
  7. URGE –  A POC-led reproductive rights and justice non-profit for young people in the South and Midwest.

“LegalAbortion.eth was created to make this as easy and safe as possible for people who want to anonymously send ETH and USDC,” UnicornDao tweeted. “It goes into the same fund and split among those 7 orgs.”

At the time of writing, LegalAbortion.eth has received over $17,500 in donations. The ENS to make donations are LegalAbortion.eth and LegalAbortions.eth. Besides, those who wish to make a tax-deductible donation can use this dApp

Who created LegalAbortion.eth?

LegalAbortion.eth is an initiative by Pussy Riot and their associated DAO, UnicornDAO. Pussy Riot is a Russian political protest art collective that has previously launched several Web3 initiatives to support a number of causes. For example, early this year, UnicornDAO dropped an NFT to raise funds for war-torn Ukraine

Furthermore, early this month, Pussy Riot entered Texas’ state capitol building to protest against the state’s abortion policies. They unfurled a 45-foot banner reading “MATRIARCHY NOW” on the building. They also announced plans to create an NFT out of the video of the event. Additionally, they will auction the NFT and use the funds to support reproductive rights.

“We believe that every person with a womb has a f***ing right to decide what they want to do with their own body,” one of the Pussy Riot members said at the time

The Web3 space, in general, has been quick to come to the aid of several causes across the globe. We can likely expect more initiatives like LegalAbortion.eth to come up in the near future. Already, UnicornDAO has put out a call for projects and ideas that integrates the Legal Abortion wallet. The DAO will also host Authentic Autonomy,  a gallery to support reproductive rights. All proceeds from this exhibition also will go to the above organisations.
