Hi all. I have been struggling with this question myself for the past month or so, and I’ve yet to come to a conclusion, so I need your help. Here’s a little background about me first:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science,
Took part in a Blockchain club from 2015-16,
Currently a software engineer
To specify my question further—is there anything that non fungible token technology allows us to do that we simply couldn’t before? Or is it all just hype?
NFTs are simply blockchain technology with the added functionality of allowing code to be specific as a parameter that you’re keeping track of on chain.
You could already trade in-game items on marketplaces with existing data structures, this is not new functionality. You could already create a limited amount of something and allow a user to have utility behind it using previous systems.
If you would like to provide an answer to this question; please provide an example of a novel use case therefore proving me wrong by contradiction (I would love this, because so many people seem so inspired to create cool projects with this new technology). Thanks!
