When Spinterlands was launched in 2021, it rode the play-to-earn storm. This storm was driven by blockchain games like Axie Infinity, DeFi Kingdoms, and Alien Worlds. Splinterlands fell out of the fray because of issues within the game’s economics which allowed bots to play for nearly free. To address this issue, the Splinterlands team altered its rewards system, which is expected to go live by the end of the month.
Splinterlands is a play to earn collectable cards game. Users battle against each other and receive rewards at the end of each game and season. In the recent update, the Splinterlands team has revised their Ranked Rewards system. Earlier, users received reward shares for each battle won.
In the revamped model, the rewards are based on a number of factors like energy rating and alpha cards generating bonuses. Rewards shares will be based on how much Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) a player earns. DEC is the in-game currency for Splinterlands. It is trading close to $0.00116 at press time, according to Coinmarketcap. With this update, the amount of DEC earned by a player will affect the chests earned during daily and seasons rewards.
Big Changes In The Offing
Splinterlands also introduced a tier-based rewards system for starter cards. If the winning team uses a starter card in battle, the rewards is reduced by the percentage of starter cards uses. If all the starter cards are used, the DEC rewards will be reduced. The only method through which users can earn DEC from wins is to – own, rent, or borrow non-starter cards. This would prevent the rewards being reduced due to users holding starter cards.
The game’s Daily Quests will be renamed Daily Focus, lasting 24 hours. This will allow players to earn upto 30 chest a day. The purpose of these quests is to accumulate focus points to earn chests. That said, Quest potions will be removed and anyone with potions can refund them for DEC.
Splinterlands is also launching 12 new cards which will include a new ability, Reflection Shield. This ability makes a card immune to secondary damage from abilities like Magic Reflect, Thorns, Return Fire, and Blast.
The release for these changes, expect the DEC rewards on starter cards, is planned for Sunday May 22. However, it’s likely that the changes won’t reflect until May 31, the start of the next season.
