Discord Moderator Turns Vigilante After Unveiling NFT Scam

Twitter user @kdkdoteth strikes a blow to a group of scammers, saving many potential victims. He was initially offered a job as a Discord moderator, but they actually wanted him to post a scam link in his own community. This was when he went full vigilante mode and scammed the scammers instead.

Here’s How It All Went Down

The scammers first approached him with a position as Head Moderator in their up-and-coming NFT project. The Discord moderator does have a good track record in managing various communities, one of them being Treeverse. He also has working experience at Vayner Media. However, his actual job would have been to share scam links within his communities. He would have then received 40% of the funds taken by the scam.

He then decided to negotiate a better offer for himself, including a 1.25 ETH upfront fee. The deal was for him to post the link in the Treeverse Discord. The scammers fell for it and transferred the 1.25 ETH to him, right before he exposed them. At the time of writing, the Treeverse Discord has 16,578 community members, so you can imagine the possible number of victims.

In addition to this heroic act, he is also giving away 0.25 ETH to five random people that retweet his cautionary tale. Being a Discord moderator, he understands how easy it is for moderators and projects to overlook Discord security. Although scammers are ultimately at fault, each project should take the responsibility to protect its own community.
